Common Sense Approaches to Network Security
Brian Caldwell
Presidium Manager
It doesn't take a lot of effort to make a big difference
in beginning the process of protecting your company's
network infrastructure. As the old adage goes, it will
cost less now to prevent a problem than it will cost
to recover from one later.
The Sans Institute has put together a list called "
The Twenty Critical Controls
" that encompass all aspects of a secure network.
This list and other detailed information can be viewed
at
http://www.sans.org/cag/guidelines.php
.
ETC ComputerLand's Presidium suite of services can
assist you in reaching many of these goals right out
of the box. The number one item on the list is inventory.
To begin protecting your infrastructure you need to
know and understand what it is that you are protecting.
This includes the software installed on that which
you are trying to protect. For example, with Presidium
we can inventory all of your network attached devices
and the software installed on them. Presidium can even
tell you when unauthorized software has been installed.
Knowing the type of devices that are installed on your
network can be useful for audits of many types. It
can also assist in the planning stages for replacing
possibly outdated hardware.
In support of control 6 of the 20 Critical Controls,
Presidium can also monitor the health of your critical
systems 24x7 by providing continuous insight into their
performance. For example, if a critical server maintains
a very high CPU load for an extended period of time,
or even displays this behavior but only during certain
times of the day, our Presidium tools can assist us
in informing you as to when and why this behavior is
occurring. For example, because Presidium monitors
your systems 24x7, we can assist you in determining
if the increased load is business related, or possibly
malware related. In either case, we will then consult
with you on the best approach to resolving, and more
importantly preventing, the problem from reoccurring.

The Do's and Dont's of Email
Chris Simmons
Marketing Coordinator
We do most of our business communication
today by email. Sometimes email is incomplete, sent
to the wrong person or is an inappropriate message.
Here are a few tips to double check before sending
that email.
Don’t Rely on Your Spelling & Grammar
Checker Alone Sometimes these features may
correct the word or phrase and completely change the
sentence’s meaning. Remember to keep your email
concise and professional. There is no need for outrageous
fonts, pictures, embedded html and other types of graphics
or audio.
Politically Incorrect? Sometimes email
subjects should be considered prohibited such as chain
letter email, email from the foreign dignitary or email
about the guy and the lady joke. If you have to think
about it for more than 5 seconds, it probably could
be considered offensive to someone.
Email at Work, Belongs to Your Job Your
work email is not your private information. All incoming
and outgoing information is the company’s property.
Reply Swiftly Customers send an email
because they wish to receive a quick response. Each
email should be replied to within at least 24 hours
and preferably within the same working day. If the
email is complicated, just send an email back saying
that you have received it and that you will get back
to them. This will put the customer's mind at rest
and usually customers will then be very patient! Know
When Not to Email Some information can just
be too personal or sensitive to send via email. Or
if an email is lingering on, and the tone begins to
change, it might be a good idea to just to pick up
the telephone and call the person. Don’t use
email to cover up a mistake or to avoid an uncomfortable
situation. If the person is in the same office, pay
a little trip to them. Following these tips will help
you keep your email professional.
