Data on the Go!

In today's world of constant computer use, keeping computer files handy is almost a necessity.  In years past this was easily accomplished by using the floppy drive and disk.  However, now, in 2006, computer users are limited in two areas by floppies.  The floppy disks only have 1.4 megabytes of space and many new computers do not even have a floppy drive installed!

A cost effective and easy way to transport data is a thumb drive.  A thumb drive is a small device roughly the size of a person's thumb (hence the name) that can store a person's data.  These small devices use a USB (Universal Serial Bus) interface to exchange data with a computer. Don't let the small size fool you though; these tiny tools can hold from 64 megabytes to 3 gigabytes (3,000 megabytes).  That is over 2,000 floppies worth of information in a space the size of your thumb.

A last note about these mini devices is that they are extremely easy to use. Just pop them in one of the many USB slots on a computer running Windows 2000 or Windows WP, wait about 30 seconds, and they can be used just like floppies of old.  Save or copy to them, drag and drop, and your files are essentially backed up, with quickness and ease of use.

March GiFT winner - Congratulations Paw Pals!

"How exciting for us!" - Jane Holt, operator of Paw Pals in Quincy, Illinois.

As many of you may already know, GIFT is a monthly computer and technology giveaway sponsored by ETC Computer Solutions to benefit local charitable and service organizations which are tax exempt under IRS 501(c)(3).

Eligibility: Only 501(c)(3) tax exempt organizations can win, those organizations with principal offices in the Quincy area are eligible. Any person may register an organization, multiple entries will be destroyed. No purchase is necessary. Limit one entry per organization. Any organization having won in the last twelve months is not eligible.

Drawings: Drawings would be held monthly. On the last Friday of each month, in the case of Friday being a holiday, the drawing will be held the previous day. All entries are due by midnight of the day prior to the drawing. ETC will draw an entrant at random and inform the winner via e-mail or telephone. If not claimed within 7 days, a new name will be drawn until a winner is chosen.

Miscellaneous items: Computer specifications are to be determined by ETC. System shall contain operating system, mouse, keyboard, network ability, and monitor among other items. ETC is not responsible for updating, maintaining, providing a warranty, servicing, or installing the unit.

Helping Southeastern School District

ETC Computer Solutions donated one of our technicians for a day at Southeastern School District in Bowen.  We were able to provide and setup brand new Dell computers to the school in less than a week's time - and sent Ryan Hinkamper onsite to assist with cabling, downloading updates, and getting the school back online.  We congratulate the school regarding their efforts and look forward to helping with their rebuilding efforts!
