Go Wireless!
Wireless has gotten quite a bit of press lately with one of the
mayoral candidates promoting wireless over all of Quincy. What
follows is a brief intro into the world without wires for your internet
needs.
One of the first items you'll need is a wireless adapter with prices
from $25-$100 depending on speed, options, and standards. Linksys,
Netgear, D-Link and Belkin are examples of inexpensive manufacturers
of wireless equipment. The adapter is available in USB (external
connection for laptop or computer), PC Card (plug-in or built-in for
laptops), and PCI (internal connection for computers) and receives information
from a wireless router. Both the router and adapter must be
configured to communicate with each other and must include security settings
to prevent others from using your internet.
Next is the need for a wireless router. Estimated price s range
from $60-$200 - depending on speed, options, and standards. A
router acts as the gateway to the internet. The unit plugs into your
current high-speed internet equipment supplied by your internet provider.
Keep in mind that wireless from a provider such as Adams NetWorks
is _to_ your house, once inside your house, you may still use the wireless
equipment as mentioned above.
Let ETC know if you're interested in wireless for your home or office. Watch
next month's article as we discuss the ever-changing wireless standards
such as 802.11g and 802.11i. |
