Cross Browser Compatibility

If you have ever watched a 3-D movie in a theater then you know how important those funky looking glasses are. When viewing web pages our glasses are called a browser. Microsoft has its blue E, Internet Explorer, and Mac has Safari. Others like Firefox and Opera are often overlooked by inexperienced developers when a site is being developed. This can cause unintended and often very messy results.

The Internet is based on standards, but like most things often there are grey areas. This can mean garbled text, broken links and shoddy pages for users who use a different browser than the site was designed for. While it takes longer to make sure that a page is compatible with so many different browsers, it is becoming increasingly important. Statistics for last month show over 40% of Internet users used something other than Internet Explorer. That’s a lot of potential customers, be sure they see what you want them to see.

A browser is like a fine suit of clothing, what works for one may not fit another. Your browser acts as an extension of yourself. Much like clothing browsers are designed for specific roles. Opera and its blazing speed will leave you feeling like you’re on the autobahn. There are many others as well, each with a unique personality, and now may be the time to look at trying something new. Don’t be uncomfortable with your browser, make sure it fits.
