Jessica Unger

There are several basic SEO (Search Engine Optimization) practices that any design company should already have in place when creating a new website. Designers and Developers use keywords while creating a site placing them strategically in page titles, headings on pages, in words with emphasis, images, and links.

Here are a few tips and questions to consider when coming up with keywords for your website.

  • What keywords describe the content of my website?
  • What keywords would users enter into a search engine?
  • Use synonyms as keywords because other people may use a different word for one that you are using.
  • Limit keywords to no more than 10, too many keywords cause search engines to ignore your site.

Would your business survive a disaster?

Kim Brown
Client Liaison

Having a Disaster Recovery Plan (DRP) is essential to all businesses, large and small.

How detailed is your plan?  Below is just an example of some of the questions your company should consider:

  • Is your data backed up daily with a copy of that data stored at an offsite location?  Who is responsible for that backup plan?  Has a restore been tested to ensure the data is recoverable?
  • Do you have a current network diagram with up to date network settings documented?
  • Do you have copies of your critical software media stored offsite?
  • Do you know what computer equipment would be critical to replace and do you have an agreement with a vendor to secure that equipment in a timely fashion?
  • Have you secured an offsite location to relocate to in order to get your business up and running?
  • Do you have a plan for getting Internet access to an alternate location?
  • Do you have a plan for contacting employees and customers in the event of a disaster?  What about a plan for accounting for employees should the disaster occur during business hours?

Once you are able to answer these questions (and many more), policies and procedures should be put in place and employees should be educated on the Disaster Recovery Plan.

ETC Computerland is currently working with clients on Disaster Recovery Plans as well as other proactive solutions regarding their IT systems.  If you are not comfortable with your current DRP or other IT solutions, help is just a phone call away.  Call for your Introductory Assessment today!

Realizing Technology

Mark Voshake
Interactive Web Developer

TECHNOLOGY. What comes to mind when you see or hear this word? Do you automatically think of computers, mp3 players, cell phones, and cars? If so, you are correct. However, think of why these technologies do exist.

Technologies exist to better our lives by how they're made and designed. As with anything else, technology also has downsides. First, we must learn how to use it. Second, when technology breaks, our lives may come to a screeching halt due to our dependence on it. Third, a technology can become obsolete, thus there is a constant need to keep up-to-date with the latest technology. Most importantly, always have a backup plan in case technology fails.

In today’s society, we probably don’t think about how much work is put into these technologies. As you are reading this article on your electronic device, many ideas and hours were spent before settling on the final product.

Most importantly, don’t take technology for granted. Use it to better yourself and others. Technology defines who you are, but don’t become solely dependent that you forget that there is life outside of technology.
