Website Security

John Richards
Web Developer/Programmer

A recent rash of website attacks has broken out. The month of April was full of website exploits. Many prominent sites were targeted. Obama's campaign site, United Nation's site, multiple UK government sites, Canadian National Security, and literally hundreds of thousands more have been targeted.

Over 500,000 sites were hit with malicious code. The hackers used the corrupted web pages to exploit vulnerabilities on computers that visited the sites. The two key areas of security failure were the site’s poor coding that allowed it to be exploited and users who visited the site without virus and spyware protection. The latter problem is fairly easy to fix, ETC ComputerLand offers a variety of different anti-virus solutions to fit your specific need. The first problem however is harder to resolve. The vulnerability was due to coders not checking user input for harmful code.

The developers here use safe coding practices to sanitize user input, thereby eliminating this common avenue of attack. ETC ComputerLand can assist in restoring both PCs and websites in the event of a harmful attack so you're never without options.

For more information or assistance with your website contact ETC ComputerLand's Web Department at 217-228-6180.

Happy Birthday WWW!

On April 30, 1993 Tim Berners-Lee of CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) announced that his recently developed “World Wide Web” was openly available and free to use.  Hot on the heels of that announcement was the release of the Mosaic Web browser, developed at the University of Illinois by Marc Andreessen and funded by the Gore Bill (High Performance Computer and Communications Act of 1991).  Together, these innovations launched the World Wide Web revolution.

In just 15 years we’ve gone from a few thousand scientists, military personnel and geeks using the Web for specialized projects, to hundreds of millions of people using the Web for work, banking, entertainment and personal communications.  And Sir Tim (as he’s now known) says the Web is “still in its infancy.”

Control F

Have you ever been on a website looking for a specific paragraph or word on the site? Suppose you did a Google search for something and it brought you to a website that had a large amount of text on it. Instead of reading through the entire page of text to find exactly what you're looking for you can just hit "Ctrl F" ( "Apple F" for Mac users) and search for a specific word. Most browsers support this function by just holding down the Control key (Apple key for Mac users) on your keyboard along with the "F" key and it will allow you to search the page for what you're looking for.

The following Browsers respond to "Ctrl F" ( "Apple F" for Mac users) as described:

  • Mozilla Firefox brings up a search field at the bottom of your browser window to enter search information.
  • Internet Explorer and Opera bring up a pop-up box that allows you to enter search information.
  • Safari brings up a search field at the top of your browser window to enter search information.
